In a new TikTok trend, people are eating biodegradable Styrofoam from packages assuming it’s edible.

On TikTok, people who shop online claim that the biodegradable Styrofoam in the packages is the “perfect late-night snack.”

This information is apparently supported by the assumption that the pieces of Styrofoam are completely edible since they dissolve when placed in the mouth, which has left internet users stunned.

“Biodegradable does not mean edible,” warned a TikTok user. “Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should!” scolded another. “Girl, these [Styrofoams] have probably been on the floor and touched by who knows how many people. Please don’t die,” pleaded a third.

Experts quickly warned that packaging Styrofoam should not be consumed. At best, eating these eco-friendly shipping materials could cause bloating, pain, and gas.

But at worst, the process by which Styrofoam, even biodegradable, is made can form acrylamide, a compound linked to ovarian and endometrial cancer, according to nurse Angelica McGough.
